Carrera Podium Icaro

In 2003, Mercatone Uno underwent a revolution: after a failed attempt to merge with another team, the team managed to participate in the season, albeit in the second division. Despite the difficulties, Pantani faced the season with renewed enthusiasm, thanks to the return of team director Davide Boifava, with whom his professional career had begun, and the support of his teammates, including Roberto Conti once again. Ironically, the bike, as a palindrome twist of fate, returned to its origins after Bianchi and Wilier Triestina: the Carrera. At the Giro, Pantani used Lightweight carbon wheels, contrary to the sponsor's wishes, while the frame reverted to aluminum, with blue, white-yellow, or entirely yellow liveries. He came close to victory early in the season and remained high in the general classification at the Giro until his fall on the Sampeyre, ultimately finishing in fourteenth place. He attempted to participate in the Tour with the Bianchi team, unfortunately without success: thus ended his unique sporting journey and the legend began.
